[Editor’s Note: We don’t agree with the evolutionary reasoning, but besides that, the obstetric opinion and experience along with the stats are quite revealing]

There is a good chance that your grandparents were born at home. I am going to go ahead and assume they turned out fine, or at least fine enough, since you were eventually born too and are now reading this.

But since the late 1960s, very few babies in the United Kingdom or the United States have been born outside of hospitals. As a result, you may find the new guidelines from the UK’s National Institutes for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) just as surprising as I did. For many healthy women, the NICE guidelines authors believe, there may be significant benefits to going back to the way things were.

  1. I am currently in training for a certification as a doula. The actual statistics in childbirth in America are shocking.

In case you don’t know what a doula is, a doula is essentially a birth assistant/support for the mother during childbirth. Often a woman has a husband with her but the man usually feels out of his comfort zone and we all know that the support from a woman is sometimes more helpful that from a man. Some women have their mom, a friend, or relative but may not feel completely at ease with them. A doula is someone who is trained in relaxation and pain alternatives to help the mom obtain a safe and empowering birth. Birth, until only the last few decades, was a woman’s job. It was a time where the women of a community/family would come together and help the birthing woman. It was quite a bonding moment for the women of the family/community.

On a side note, I would encourage any Christian woman to go into work as a doula. There are so very few Christians in this field. Most are New Age, atheists, or a mix of all kinds of stuff.
